DIVA ADHD - Improving Adult ADHD Diagnosis

DIVA is a semi-structured, structured interview designed to improve ADHD assessments for adults. This study will evaluate the validity of the criterion used to determine DIVA 2.0 as well as its concomitant validity with Conners Adult ADHD Diagnosis Interview for DSM-IV criteria.

Compared to the top 20 attributes, DIVA attributes that correlate strongest with diagnosis are attention deficit for both childhood and adulthood and hyperactivity/impulsivity for adults, followed by CAARS ADHD TT1 score and IOWA personality disorders evaluation.

Signs and symptoms

The symptoms of ADD/ADHD affect every aspect of our lives from relationships to advancement in our careers and the daily tasks we perform. That's why it is so crucial that our ADHD assessments take a holistic approach by examining how symptoms impact all areas of life. Dr. Schilling will begin by assessing your symptoms and medical history. She will then conduct the DIVA 5 assessment. The DIVA is an interviewing tool developed by psychotherapists and psychiatrists to determine the signs of adult ADHD. It has been proven to have a high sensitivity to sound and specificity. It is also extremely effective in identifying individuals suffering from the disorder. It can help raise awareness and help diagnose adult ADHD in Korea since it is the only validated semistructured diagnostic interview available in the country.

In order to conduct the DIVA A trained professional typically a psychiatrist or psychologist - will ask questions about the main symptoms of ADHD such as inattention, hyperactivity, and the tendency to be impulsive. The psychologist will also look into the background of the individual by looking at their early experiences and how those may influence their present behavior. The symptoms of ADHD are not sudden. They appear over a long period of time from childhood to teenage years and then into adulthood.

The DIVA can detect ADHD because it takes into account both the DSM-IV ADHD criteria in childhood and in adulthood and how these signs have affected the individual's daily functioning in five distinct areas - education, employment, family/partner relationships social activities/leisure, as well as confidence in oneself. Other screening tools, like the WURS brief, which was compared with the CAADID showed poor sensitivity, and negative predictive value.

Diagnosis

To determine ADHD in adults, it is important that you evaluate the symptoms as well as their background. This can be done with an extensive interview regarding childhood symptoms and an assessment of the neurological. It is important to consider the impact that these symptoms have on the person's job and daily life. This can be assessed through a structured medical interview, the DIVA, and in some cases, obtaining information from family members and friends.

The DIVA interview is a semistructured interview originally developed for adults in the Netherlands. It has been updated to be used by adults in other countries including Korea. This study examined the criterion applicable to the Korean version (DIVA-5) using an actual clinical sample of adults suffering from ADHD.

During the DIVA, the clinician asks about the presence of ADHD symptoms during childhood and adulthood, the time at which the symptoms begin to manifest, and the extent of impairment caused by those symptoms. The clinician will also collect different sociodemographic information and inquire about any psychiatric co-morbidity.

MINI-S and Version 5.0.0 The MINI-S plus Version 5.0.0, the Brief Alcohol Related Neuropsychological Impaired Screening Instrument (BEARNI), and the Frontal Assessment Battery were used to screen for psychiatric co-morbidity. Two psychiatrists with experience employed the structured diagnostic interview DIVA-5 in order to establish a clinical diagnosis of ADHD. They assessed symptoms both in adulthood and childhood, and determined the duration of symptoms.

The sensitivity and specificity of DIVA-5 was found to be high for both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms in childhood and adulthood. The diagnostic tool was demonstrated to have good concordance with the WURS scale, and fair concurrent validity with three self-report ratings instruments: the ASRS, FAB, and Sheehan's Dysfunction Inventory.

The sensitivity and specificity of the DIVA-5 was found to be high for all subtypes of ADHD in both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity in adulthood and during childhood. The DIVA-5's diagnostic accuracy was found to be comparable to that of a clinical diagnosis given by two psychiatrists. This was in accordance with the sensitivity and specificity of earlier screening tools, such as ASRS and WURS.

The DIVA assessment is a highly effective way of diagnosing adult ADHD, with high sensitivity and specificity. It has also been proven to be valid as a criterion when compared with self-report scales for rating such as the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) and the ADHD-Rating Scale. It has a good concordance with these scales and reasonable validity with Sheehan's Dysfunction Inventory.

The DIVA evaluation, in contrast to more traditional methods of measuring ADHD in adulthood, focuses on identifying the symptoms that occur during childhood and adults. This improves the accuracy of diagnosis and allows for a more accurate comparison of sociodemographic characteristics between the two groups. The DIVA evaluation also offers an opportunity to consider the effect of co-occurring conditions on the presentation of ADHD symptoms.

If your Psychologist is unable to recommend treatment, it might be necessary to set up an appointment with a pediatrician or Psychiatrist to further assess and/or therapy. You may be referred to psychologists who specialize in thorough assessment of your symptoms and to determine if there is any co-occurring or different diagnoses. This includes assessing for comorbid disorders like depression and anxiety. This will allow your Psychologist to recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
